Gaming VPN: check ping before choosing a plan
Fast download speeds do not automatically mean a responsive game
Check latency to the game server and how much it changes during a match
Why a VPN can change your ping
A VPN adds an intermediate server to the connection path
Extra distance and traffic processing can add latency, so a promise of zero ping is not a useful measure
The result depends on the route between you, the VPN server and the game server
The nearest country on a list does not always deliver the best result
Compare the available options inside your game
Network congestion and weak Wi-Fi can also introduce delay
If the connection is unstable without a VPN, check your ordinary internet connection first
Background on latency: Cloudflare’s explanation
Compare the same game with and without a VPN
- Choose one game server region and keep it unchanged
- Pause background downloads and use the same network and device
- Note normal ping and any spikes before connecting the VPN
- Connect the VPN and repeat the check in the same game mode
- Compare other available VPN servers one at a time
Do not judge the connection only by its lowest ping
Spikes, packet loss and disconnects can be more disruptive than a slightly higher but consistent delay
Before paying for a gaming VPN
Does it support your device and connection method? Are suitable server regions available? Can your gaming computer and phone connect at the same time, and are there data limits?
A console may need a separate setup method
A Windows client does not establish support for PlayStation or Xbox
An advertised download speed cannot replace an in-game check
If a short subscription is available, it gives you a way to evaluate the service before buying a longer term
Voice chat and work calls
The same approach helps with voice chat and work calls
Listen for dropouts and check whether the connection stays up throughout a conversation
Check VPNKA’s supported devices and terms on the plans page and in your account before payment
